Skills Training for 250 Tsunami-Affected Women
More Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesMore than 3,500 families in the 11 villages in which the Centre works were affected by the tsunami. Few rehabilitation efforts have addressed the long-term economic and psychological consequences of the disaster on women and children. There is no chance to resume fishing for the next 3 to 6 months so the burden of running the family falls on women. The project will provide rehabilitation services to 250 affected women. ActivitiesThe project will create alternative livelihood opportunities by providing vocational skill training for 250 women. We will also help them get loans to start their own business. Funding InformationTotal Funding Received to Date: $49,510 Funding InformationThis project is now in implementation and no longer available for funding. Received funds will be used to accomplish concrete objectives as indicated in the project's "Activities" section. Updates will be posted under the "Progress Report" tab as they become available. Donors' contributions and pledges to this project totaled $49,510. The original project funding goal was $86,210. Renuka received her undergraduate degree from Ghandi Grameen University and got married soon after. By 1993, Renuka was one of three women activists in Chennai working with women in city slums and the surrounding coastal areas. Only 2% of organizations in India were run by women at the time and Human Rights organizations were very rare.
