Tsunami Relief - Safe drinking water in India
More Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesRoughly 500,000 displaced survivors are being housed in temporary camps or shelters. Clean, safe drinking water is in short supply, and is being provided via unsustainable measures. Water purification and disinfection systems are needed to address both immediate and long term needs of the survivors. Cholera and diarrheal disease was already endimic in the region prior to the tsunami (70,000 accute cases in 2004 alone). ActivitiesWaterHealth International (WHI) installs water purification systems for emergency relief in temporary shelters. Germicidal UV light disinfects surface water, rivers, well water or contaminated municipal water; produces water meeting WHO guidelines. Funding InformationTotal Funding Received to Date: $136,802 Funding InformationThis project is now in implementation and no longer available for funding. Received funds will be used to accomplish concrete objectives as indicated in the project's "Activities" section. Updates will be posted under the "Progress Report" tab as they become available. Donors' contributions and pledges to this project totaled $136,802. The original project funding goal was $250,000.
