Security and Privacy

3.1 What is the due diligence process, and how do I know the project leader is trustworthy?

GlobalGiving has vetted Ford Motor Company's employee-nominated projects to ensure they are high quality, well run, and satisfy IRS guidelines for international grantmaking as well as the new voluntary guidelines for anti-terrorism set forth in the USA PATRIOT Act. As part of GlobalGiving's rigorous due diligence process, projects are required to provide detailed background information on the project leader, the project's objectives, and expected outcomes once the project receives funding. Learn more about the due diligence process. Learn more about GlobalGiving's due diligence process.

3.2 How do I know my donation is secure?

All credit card donations are collected through VeriSign, a secure third party with whom we contract for this purpose, or PayPal, another highly secure third-party payment system. Because all transactions go through third parties, neither Ford Motor Company nor GlobalGiving receives or retains credit card numbers. Furthermore, we will never release your personal information to any outside party unless you authorize us to do so.

3.3 What is Ford GlobalGiving's privacy policy?

When you make a contribution to a project on Ford GlobalGiving, your name, billing address, email address, and credit card information are collected by a third-party credit card vendor (VeriSign or PayPal). If you elect to sign up for GlobalGiving's mailing list (to receive newsletters and project updates), GlobalGiving will collect your name and email address. In addition, while donors are encouraged to share their name and address with the project itself in order to foster long-term relationships, at time of check-out, donors may elect to remain anonymous. In this case, your complete privacy will be maintained.

Making a donation

4.1 Is my donation tax deductible?

For individuals who are taxpayers in the U.S., donations to projects featured on Ford GlobalGiving go through the GlobalGiving Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, and thus all donations are tax deductible for U.S. taxpayers to the full extent permitted by law. Employees in other countries should consult with their local tax regulations for applicable rules.

4.2 What are the methods of payment?

Ford GlobalGiving currently accepts credit/debit cards, checks, bank drafts, PayPal, and stock transfers. Payment is made through the GlobalGiving Foundation, in U.S. dollars only.

To pay by credit/debit card or PayPal, click "Give Now" and we will process your transaction through our secure server. For more details about hot the Paypal service works and countries in which the service is available, see www.paypal.com.

Checks or bank drafts to projects featured on Ford GlobalGiving should be in US dollars made payable to The GlobalGiving Foundation. The project name should be written in the memo field. Mail all checks to:

The GlobalGiving Foundation
1816 12th Street NW - 3rd Floor
Washington, DC 20009
USA

4.3 Is there a minimum donation?
The minimum donation through Ford GlobalGiving is US $10.

4.4 How much of my donation will actually go to the project?

GlobalGiving takes a 10% fee to cover the costs of conducting due diligence on Ford-nominated projects and presenting them on the website. There is also a nominal fee that covers the cost of transferring funds overseas. Between 85-90% of your money goes directly to the project you choose to support. Our fee is one of the lowest fees available in international philanthropy, and because funds go directly to the project level, your contribution goes much further than most other international giving options.

4.5 Is there a way to keep track of my donations?

When you give through the Ford GlobalGiving website, you will be asked for a minimal amount of information in order to create a user profile. This profile will allow you to keep track of your giving history, and to access project updates. In addition, all contributions made to projects through the Ford GlobalGiving web site will be acknowledged with a receipt.

Project Selection

5.1 How were the projects selected for Ford GlobalGiving?

Projects on the Ford GlobalGiving website were nominated by Ford employees. All projects have been reviewed and vetted through GlobalGiving's due diligence process. Learn more about the nomination process.

5.2 How do I choose a project that is right for me?

After looking through the Ford GlobalGiving website, you may identify a project in which you have a particular interest—based on the theme, location, or size of the project's budget.

5.3 How does the money get to the project?

Each month, the contributions from all donors are pooled by GlobalGiving, which transfers the money either to the group sponsoring the project or the implementing project leader at the local country level. If the money is transferred to a sponsoring organization, we then wire the funds directly to the project leader. If the funds are directed to the implementing organization in a different country, bank wire transfer charges may apply.

5.4 What happens if a project receives more funding than it requests?

There may be some instances in which projects receive more funding than the project leaders had requested. If so, GlobalGiving will contact those donors who have contributed to projects that have exceeded the funding amount and work with them to reallocate funding to a similar type of project.

5.5 What happens if a project receives only a small proportion of the funding it requests?

Occasionally, there will be projects that receive only a small percentage of their requested funding. If a project is pledged less than the requested amount, GlobalGiving will either work with the project to see if a subset of the project goals can be met through that funding, or work with those donors who contributed to that project to identify an appropriate project to which funds can be reallocated.

5.6 How do I keep track of the progress of the projects?

Each donor is added to a mailing list specific to the project to which he/she has given. Whenever a project leader posts an update to that project, you will automatically receive notification of that progress report.

In addition, every donor has a choice of becoming known to the project leader or remaining anonymous. For donors who choose to become known to the project leader, the donor's contact information is provided to the project leader, so you may receive updates directly from the project. In addition, each project includes the contact information of the project leader, which allows donors to establish a relationship with those running the project and to follow its progress.
