Gap Inc has decided to narrow its philanthropic focus to make a greater impact in the communities where we live and work.
We're taking a global approach to community investment by supporting causes for the developed and the developing worlds that are relevant to the business and where we know we can create long-term change. 74% of our grants will be awarded to Women's Advancement and Underserved Youth (ages 12-18).
In the developing world we focus on women who work in our vendors' factories. We support their career advancement and provide them with the opportunities to build knowledge, skills and the tools they need for work and life. The goal is to help women advance by creating greater opportunities and options.
Women are also a great fit for the company's focus. 70-80% of Gap Inc.'s product is made by women, and women represent 70% of the company's workforce and 60% of our customer base.
In the developed countries where we do business, we'll support underserved youth through programs and job readiness and career exploration.
The goal is to expose youth to a supportive, safe learning environment that will equip them with work and life skills. Our belief is that a first job experience can provide important skills and lessons that can carry on throughout a person's life.
Why youth? Young people are our future. Their success is critical for the community of Gap Inc. They represent our future neighbors, citizens, co-workers and customers.
