Seva Mandir (SM) runs non-formal education (NFE) centres to cater to children from poor tribal families in 583 villages of Rajasthan. Access to education is limited because (a) it is locally unavailable (b) of domestic and economic pressures or (c) it has traditionally not been accorded value. SM involves local communities in the management of NFEs and trains local instructors. NFEs equip children with essential skills for coping with the challenges of contemporary life.

NFEs run in rooms donated by villagers (or rented). Children are taught by village young men/women the basic numeric & literacy skills. Besides 3Rs, good habits, creative activities, visits to city/zoo/library are also undertaken. |

Enabling children to read and write independently with comprehension; Enabling marginalized tribal communities to experience alternative and meaningful education; empowering communities to demand quality education from the government. |
A reason why children in this region cannot attend school is that there is not enough 'push' in community/ family of the children & simultaneously no 'pull ' from Govt. schools.
