Unemployed men standing on the side of the road in South Africa's urban centres are low skilled, and often do not have work references. Many cannot take advantage of training that is offered as they lack funds for transport to and from the training, and they also need to seek work daily to feed their families. Richard Ryan, national training co-ordinator believes that "Our training provides these men the opportunity of learning a skill that will allow them to enter the open labour market."

Training is provided to unemployed men in skills such as bricklaying, construction, carpentry, plastering, tiling, painting, decorating and plumbing. Training is focused on skills needed by the labour market to ensure success in finding work. |

This training project will benefit 20 unemployed day laborers by equipping them with a new skill required by the labour market. This training makes these men more confident in their ability to find work and to earn an income for their families. |

"I was suffering and the gardening training helped me a lot. I am the head of the family in my home - the only man with seven sisters! Now I can support them and my own family as well."
