Mothers and Families Are Learning and Growing Healthy Food!

By Grace Alfiero | Executive Director of Karuna-Shechen, USA

Villagers meeting in Northern India

To date, the field team in Northern India has been able to:

  • Distribute non-GMO seeds and plants to grow nutritious, organic fruits and vegetable gardens to over 700 mothers and families.
  • Install wells and irrigation systems to sustain the gardens, (please see photos attached of one of the villages who recently installed a water harvesting system.)
  • Teach women and families important agricultural information specific to their geographic regions and help instill ideas of community collaborations to increase long-term sustainability.

“Through this initiative we are seeing an increase in the yield and diversity of vegetables in family meals, which will play a strong role in reducing malnutrition. We are also seeing an increase socialization through the exchange of vegetables with neighbors, a traditional practice that was common a generation ago.” ~Shamsul Akhtar, Karuna-Shechen India Director

During this summer, our field team in India was visited by a representative from GlobalGiving named Akash Pratap Singh Yadav, and he was able to see our kitchen garden projects in action and was able to meet several of the mothers and families involved. We have attached some photos from his visit.

From all of us at Karuna-Shechen we thank you for reaching out across the globe to support our “Plant Kitchen Gardens for Mothers in India” micro project — a perfect example of compassion without borders, and compassion in action!
