SURAKSHA: HIV/AIDS Prevention and Care in India
More Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesIndia is experiencing a major epidemic of HIV/AIDS. For a number of cultural and economic reasons, underprivileged women are particularly vulnerable to infection. There is a growing body of evidence to suggest that STDs facilitate the spread of HIV/AIDS. Diagnosing and treating STDs could check the spread of HIV/AIDS dramatically. The beneficiaries of the project include adolescent and young women at high risk, their partners, and those already infected. ActivitiesSuraksha combats every aspect of STDs, from counseling and clinical services that diagnose and treat the disease, to education that increases community awareness of STDs and their relationship to HIV/AIDS. Funding InformationThis project has been retired and is no longer accepting donations. Funding Policy: partial (Retired) Additional DocumentationThis project has provided additional documentation in a Microsoft Word file (projdoc.doc). ResourcesWhy this Project is ImportantPotential Long Term ImpactSuraksha battles the fear of stigma that often precludes women from getting treatment. Suraksha empowers women to act in their own right by fostering self-confidence through a belief that their physical body is strength, not a liability. Project Message
