Project Needs and Beneficiaries

With a $100 donation, we will buy 2 sacs of beans and 4 sacs of corn from local farmers in 1 harvest, working 1/2 acre of land in Thomonde. The grains produce 660 lbs of AK-1000 or 2640 servings. This will provide a fortified meal to 88 patients for an entire month.

Activities

The farmers will be encouraged to grow their crops twice a year. 75% of the product will be distributed to patients on ART in 4 clinics in the area. 25% will be sold at low cost to an active woman in a family affected by HIV as a micro enterprise.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Local farmers will have a ready market for their products. AK-1000 will fill nutritional deficits of HIV patients by providing access to fortified, nutritious food. Their families will be supported through the income generated by the enterprise.

Project Message

We need to do something for all the malnourished patients who come to the clinic everyday. I give them a prescription but they need food and a hand so they can help themselves out of their poverty.
- Hughes Jerome, MD, MHA, Medical Director for the Commune of Thomonde
