More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Since fighting broke out in Sudan’s western region of Darfur in 2003, it is estimated that over 300,000 Africans have been brutally murdered and over 1.6 million displaced by the Sudanese government-supported Arab militia. Militia members and government troops have systematically bombed and then burned African villages, tortured civilians, raped thousands of women, slaughtered hundreds of thousands of villagers and forced the remaining to flee their homes with nothing.

Activities

The Sudan fund will support local project leaders using innovative approaches to survive and rebuild in the Darfur region and in surrounding refugee camps.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Among the millions of Sudanese displaced from their homes, project leaders will create and implement local solutions to effectively respond to problems of hunger, lack of clean water, shelter, violence including rape, and medical care.

Project Message

The atrocities resulting in millions displaced and hundreds of thousands killed are ongoing today and must be addressed urgently before thousands more die.
- Brian Steidle, Peace monitor and atrocities witness in Darfur
