Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The whole community needs to be informed and prepared before a vaccine trial can take place. This is necessary not only for those who eventually become volunteers in the trial, but also so that the whole community has the facts about the study to combat stigma and counter misconceptions.

Activities

Three complementary activities are involved with this project: 1) information workshops and community outreach events; 2) community advisory board; 3) prescreening individuals for possible participation in the trial.

Potential Long Term Impact

Preparing communities for vaccine trials will help speed the search for a preventive AIDS vaccine. It also combats stigma and misconceptions about the disease. Informed people mean fewer new infections and happier lives.

Conducting vaccine studies requires several hundred volunteers. The recruitment strategy consists of 3 approaches to inform communities & individuals about HIV vaccine trials & identify participants.
