Mission

The Perinatal HIV Research Unit will reduce the impact of the HIV epidemic on South Africans in collaboration with the community and other key stakeholders.

Programs

The PHRU is involved in research, training, policy-formation and advocacy concerning HIV-positive people and their children. In recent years the work of the PHRU has extended beyond research into the prevention of mother-to-child transmission to include treatment trials in adults and children, treatment research, prevention research, psychosocial research and policy development. The unit has also developed capacity for HIV vaccine clinical trials.

Personnel Overview

Dr. Eftyhia Vardas - Director, HIV/AIDS Vaccine Division
Dr. Eftyhia Vardas, a medical doctor with a specialty in Clinical Virology, directs the HIV AIDS Vaccine Division and Research Laboratory at the PHRU and has been involved in establishing an efficient clinical group capable of conducting multiple Phase I and II HIV vaccine trials.
