Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The sandstone and marble mines are the primary source of livelihood in Rajasthan. While the mines are a source of income, the conditions for workers is one of harsh toil, ill health and debt. The situation is more severe for women as they are subjected to physical and mental harassment, denied fair wages, accorded little privacy and overworked both in the mines and at home. This in turn adversely impacts families. The project will address the needs of women working in the mines.

Activities

The project is to organize 100 women into self-help groups to provide a support group, help save money and take credit. The training will be on alternate livelihood opportunities: tailoring, handicraft & food processing along with health check-ups.

The project gives women the option to choose where they work rather than be forced to work under degrading circumstances in the mines. This also gives women more time to take care of the family.

In our efforts to draw greater attention to the appalling condition of child laborers in the mines of Jodhpur, our Research Associate, Hayden Kantor, recently wrote an op-ed article on this topic.
