Venture Strategies for Health and Development

Mission

Venture Strategies applies scientific evidence identifying tractable problems in health, combining this with opportunities inherent in local market forces to help large numbers of low income people in developing countries. We use business approaches and focus on projects that will be sustainable on a large scale, and can continue in the future without further dependence on financial support. We work closely with the School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley.

Programs

We are working with medical leaders, government officials and pharmaceutical manufacturers around the world to find ways to make high quality, low cost, off-patent products available to low income people through market distribution systems.

Personnel Overview

Ndola Prata, MD, MSc - Director of Maternal Health Program
Dr. Prata is an Angolan physician and medical demographer who has worked in many African countries. She has designed the protocols and directed technical assistance and training for the Venture Strategies clinical demonstration studies in Tanzania, Nigeria, Bangladesh, and Egypt. She is also a professor in the School of Public Health, University of California, Berkeley.

Anke Hemmerling, MD, MPH - Director, Special Health Projects
Dr Hemmerling is an obstetrician-gynecologist from Berlin where she completed an award-winning doctoral dissertation on reproductive health before receiving a Masters in Public Health at UC Berkeley. Fluent in Spanish, she has worked in Guatemala and Bolivia. She recently led a study on the safety of lime juice for vaginal use and was co-author of a misoprostol study in the Dominican Republic.

Nap Hosang, MD, MPH, MBA, FRCOG - Chairman, Venture Strategies
Dr Hosang is an obstetrician-gynecologist at Kaiser Permanente in Hayward, California. He is a lecturer and directs the Interdisciplinary MPH program for mid-career professionals at the School of Public Health, UC Berkeley. Dr Hosang is Jamaican and spent 4 years on faculty at the University of the West Indies. He focuses on management systems to reduce maternal mortality in developing countries.
