Solar Electric Systems for 10 Low-Income Families Photo Gallery

Solar install in Bayview/Hunter's Point - Dec. '06

Here's a photo from one of our recent volunteer solar installations in San Francisco's Bayview/Hunter's Point neighborhood. At front are the homeowners who participated in the installation team. Check out the old polluting smokestack in the background - this neighborhood has suffered from very high rates of asthma due to that power plant, which just got shut down due to local activism. We're helping make the transition to renewable energy here while saving money for folks who really need it!

Oakland clients installing their inverter

A GRID Alternatives client and his sons celebrating having installed their new electrical inverter. This family recently moved into a new Habitat for Humanity development in East Oakland, and participated in one of our volunteer solar installs as part of our Solarthon 2006 event. This inverter converts the DC power from their roof into AC power that their home can use, while also helping them track how much electricity the system is producing.

Up on the roof...

This is a great picture from one of our March installations in Southeast San Francisco. Thanks to all the hills in SF you can get some great views from our rooftops there. For those of you interested in volunteering but afraid of heights, there's plenty of work to be done on the ground as well. And as you can see, our roof team volunteers wear harnesses to keep them safe.

Santa Cruz solar installation team

Here's the volunteer installation team from a recent Habitat development built by Habitat for Humanity Santa Cruz County. GRID Alternatives has recently been starting to expand outside of the San Francisco Bay Area. This year we'll be expanding as far south as Bakersfield in Central CA, and as far north as Lake County in Northern CA. Our hope is that next year we'll start the process of creating our first chapter in another metro area.

Brisbane installation - Sept. '06

Here's a solar installation we did at a new Peninsula Habitat for Humanity development in Brisbane. This is actually a double-sized system - one of the homes had an adjacent tree that shaded the roof too much for solar, so we put two systems on one roof.

Solar install in Bayview/Hunter's Point - Nov. '06

Here's another solar install in Bayview/Hunter's Point from November. We've been doing a bunch of installations there as part of the City of San Francisco's "Environmental Justice Program" that focuses on areas that have been historically disproportionately impacted by pollution. Some of the money for these installations came from a settlement with Duke Energy over price gouging during the 2001 California energy crisis.

One of my favorite pics

This was taken out at a solar installation in a very rough part of East Oakland. I really like the composition with the solar volunteer in the foreground and the graffiti in the background. We get some funny looks in neighborhoods like this, where this may be the first solar electric installation folks have seen in the area, but once we explain how it works, it's great to see the neighbors get excited.

Volunteers in Livermore - Summer '06

Some volunteers at a East Bay Habitat for Humanity development in Livermore, putting a panel into place on the roof. We recently completed the third and final phase of this project - all 22 homes now have solar electric systems installed by GRID Alternatives volunteers!

Energy Efficiency Team

Here's a picture of a volunteer from one of our other programs, the Energy Efficiency Team, weather-stripping a window for a low-income senior in San Francisco. You can find more information about this program at our website, www.gridalternatives.org.

Volunteer and Homeowner up on the roof

Another nice shot of one of our volunteers up on the roof with one of our clients. In addition to helping bring the environmental and economic benefits of solar to low-income communities, and gaining knowledge and skills about solar electric technology, our volunteers also get the opportunity to meet with and work alongside folks from very different communities and backgrounds from their own.
