Mission

Interplast, the first international humanitarian organization to provide free reconstructive surgery in developing countries, makes a profound difference in the lives of 3,000 children each year who suffer physically or emotionally from a deformity or injury, such as a cleft lip or disabling burn. Renowned for the highest-quality medical care, Interplast works in partnership with volunteers and overseas medical colleagues to empower local communities so that medical access continues year-round.

Programs

- Partnering with physicians in developing countries to coordinate locally-managed Surgical Outreach Centers, as in Nepal. - Conducting ‘Visiting Educator Workshops’ to provide advanced medical training for host country health professionals. - Sending volunteer medical teams overseas to perform surgery and assist in skills transfer. - Using technology to reach poor patients, as with Interplast Grand Rounds, an innovative web-based program for surgeons from developing countries.

Personnel Overview

Dr. Goran Jovic - Dir., Interplast Surgical Outreach Center - Zambia
With Interplast since 1999, Dr. Jovic is the only plastic surgeon in Zambia - a country of more than 10 million people. A native of Serbia, he settled in Lusaka in 1993. He is on staff at two local hospitals: University Teaching Hospital and the Zambian Italian Orthopedic Hospital. Dr. Jovic also flies to remote areas of Zambia to help children in rural villages year-round.

William J. Schneider, MD - Interplast Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Schneider lives in Knoxville, TN, where he was in private practice for 22 years. He was named Chief Medical Officer of Interplast in 2002. He oversees all of Interplast’s international medical programs, with a particular focus on the Surgical Outreach Centers and other empowerment programs. He is responsible for visiting and conducting evaluations of all of Interplast’s program sites.
