A wall plaque has been ordered to be displayed in a prominent position to express our heartfelt thanks to all our Globalgiving donors that made it possible to complete this very worthy project. Pictures of the open day will be displayed on our Globalgiving web-site ASAP after May 10 2007.

Photo from the project

By Brian La Trobe - Project Leader, March 29, 2007 04:04 PM

The photo below shows the roof of the female ablution block which has been sealed and painted with a black paint sealer. The black color of the roof surface and the black polyethylene pipe facilitates the absorption of radiant heat from the sun thus heating the water for the showers below. The length of the pipe approx 100 meters.

The Refilwe Clean Water Project

By Brian La Trobe - Project Leader, March 27, 2007 04:57 PM

This project is nearing completion. The plumbing of the buildings for the showers and laundry took some time to complete. The hot water system is rather unique. It’s a cheaper version of solar power. We painted the concrete building roof black. The cold water supply is piped to the roof where it spirals through a 2 inch black plastic pipe on the concrete about 100 meters long. It comes out piping hot at the far end before going down to the showers below.

The pipe work to carry the toilet diverted urine to a connecting tank for the experimental tree fertilizer program is complete. Some trees have been planted. An orchard of fruit trees are to follow.

The toilet and shower doors are presently being installed. We await the electrical supply to light the buildings. The property has to be fenced. This is an expense that I did not anticipate.

We hope to have a grand opening at the end of April, which is about a month later than was originally planned.

Interim report from Refilwe project

By Brian La Trobe - Project Leader, December 04, 2006 04:28 PM

The installation of the 10 toilet units is almost complete. Three units have gone into the male restroom where there is also a stainless steel urinal and 7 units into the lady's restroom. I have today procured the water wash troughs for the laundry and the equipment for four showers. These will be delivered to the site next Monday.
