Reconstructing Schools for Sri Lankan Youth
More Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesThe devastating tsunamis of Dec 2004 hit the coast of Sri Lanka - killing thousands of people, washing homes out to sea, & destroying dozens of schools in the process. Yet Sri Lanka's youth need to continue learning as part of the country's long process to recovery. The renovation of these schools serve to resume the education of students affected by the tsunamis while providing them with a global education to heal the region. ActivitiesRI is refurbishing schools in Sri Lanka for tsunami-affected youth by securing new walls, building new roofs, upgrading sanitation services, weatherproofing the structures, & furnishing them with school supplies such as desks & chalkboards. Funding InformationTotal Funding Received to Date: $353 Funding InformationThis project is now in implementation and no longer available for funding. Received funds will be used to accomplish concrete objectives as indicated in the project's "Activities" section. Updates will be posted under the "Progress Report" tab as they become available. Donors' contributions and pledges to this project totaled $353. The original project funding goal was $32,000. Why this Project is ImportantPotential Long Term ImpactExpansions of the school's buildings allow the schools to accommodate two more classrooms (from 6 to 8) & increased the total floor area by 50%. Classrooms are now weatherproof for the rain with clean sanitation facilities for students to use. Project Message

When the tsunami hit the coast of Sri Lanka, not only did it kill thousands of people, wash homes out to sea, and destroy fragile local economies, it also destroyed dozens of schools. Yet these educational facilities play an invaluable roll in redeveloping disaster-stricken communities and preparing Sri Lanka’s youth for the long process of recovery ahead. Comment on this update
