School Libraries Reduce Afghan Youth Illiteracy
More Information About this ProjectProject Needs and BeneficiariesDue to ongoing civil unrest and conflict, Afghanistan's schools and libraries are in a state of despair, on top of an adult literacy rate of only 36%. With equal access to books among boys and girls, RI's libraries help close the gender gap as well as the literacy gap - necessary for the economic growth and recovery of the region. ActivitiesRI refurbishes and meets the needs of 275 schools, while providing library furniture & delivering over 82,500 books. RI trains teachers in library management, incorporation of books into curriculum, & student evaluation methods. Funding InformationTotal Funding Received to Date: $375 Funding InformationThis project is now in implementation and no longer available for funding. Received funds will be used to accomplish concrete objectives as indicated in the project's "Activities" section. Updates will be posted under the "Progress Report" tab as they become available. Donors' contributions and pledges to this project totaled $375. The original project funding goal was $10,000. Why this Project is ImportantPotential Long Term ImpactThe primary goal is to reduce illiteracy in Afghanistan, specifically, by showing a sharp increase in literacy skills among 75% of children in target schools.
