More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

All over Africa, women and girls are contracting HIV/AIDS faster than any other group. A 2005 UNAIDS report revealed that two-thirds of young women (aged 15-24 years) in 24 sub-Saharan countries lack knowledge of HIV transmission, and how it relates to their own lives. Practices like FGM increase a women’s risk of HIV infection even further. MADRE and our partners at IIN and Umoja Uaso Women’s Group are training young women in and around Umoja, Kenya to identify and resist high-risk behavior.

Activities

With your help, young women will learn to demystify and destigmatize HIV/AIDS and FGM—breaking the silence that is killing women and girls—through workshops that relate modes of transmission to their own lives.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Lower rates of HIV infection among women and reduce the number of FGM cases in rural Samburu communities; and increase pressure on Kenyan public health officials to offer access to sexual and reproductive health services to Indigenous Kenyan women.

Project Message

"Many women in our community are suffering from HIV/AIDS. We have to help them understand how it is transmitted, so that they can protect themselves."
- Rebecca Lolosoli, Director, Umoja Uaso Women's Group

Latest Update from the Field

MADRE HIV/FGM Workshops Replicated in Surrounding Areas

By Vivian Stromberg - Executive Director, MADRE, November 19, 2007 08:41 PM

The workshops funded by MADRE and the Indigenous Information Network, our sister organization in Kenya, have been successful. As detailed in the last project update, during MADRE’s 2006 delegation to Kenya, staff members conducted interactive workshops which focused on education about HIV/AIDS prevention and the dangers of female genital mutilation (FGM). MADRE delegates used a methodology called “Train the Trainer” to ensure replication of lessons learned.

MADRE staff returned from another delegation to Kenya in November 2007, and reports that similar workshops are indeed being replicated in sixteen Samburu communities. Women, men, and teens of both sexes are reported to participate in the classes.

MADRE is pleased to share with Samburu women the educational tools needed to help their families understand more about the issues that affect their lives, and we thank the GlobalGiving community for all that they have contributed to help MADRE carry out this goal.
