Project Needs and Beneficiaries
TOKTEN needs to reduce the lack of well qualified teachers to have more competitive students in the international working market. We are in pressing needs of more didactic materials (books, computers, projectors, lab equipment) in order to improve the teaching and training process. The expat nationals and Malian counterparts must work together to carry out research. We need to help the university create a library. So we have an urgent need for the technical skills.
Activities
TOKTEN utilizes national human resources to deal with the urgent needs of highly qualified specialists and teachers in the University in order to respect the standards of the African Universities. The project organizes teaching and training missions.

Dear Donors,
Thank you for your support. We would like to share with you some progress on what we have done with your funding thus far.
The TOKTEN Project of the University of Bamako covers the teaching and research missions carried out by Malians of diaspora. UNDP has helped us adminster this money for the project.
Within this convention, the Globalgiving Foundation made two deposits in UNDPs bank account amounting $3,753.10 USD, and detailed as follows:
* 1st Deposit on October 11th 2006: $3,413.72 USD * 2nd Deposit on March 13, 2007: $339.38 USD
II. Financials
The financial execution of the funds received from GlobalGiving is 3, 753.10 US$, that is 100%. See below in outcomes for more details on what work has been supported with the funding.
III. Outcomes
The funds from GlobalGiving have contributed to the realization of four (4) teaching and research missions at the Faculty of Science and Techniques of the University of Bamako.
These missions were carried out in the Departments of Mathematics (2 missions), Physics (1 mission) and Chemistry (1 mission) at the Faculty of Science and Techniques by Malian expatriates, namely: Ibrahim FOFANA (Ivory Coast) and Daouda SANGARE (France) in mathematics, Diola BAGAYOKO (USA) in physics, and partly by Sekou PLEA (France) in chemistry-environment.
The terms of reference of these missions included the supervision of students enrolled in the DEA (Master) and Doctoral dissertation courses, the participation in DEA Dissertation defense in mathematics, lectures and the recruitment of a new class of students for the DEA (Master).
All these missions resulted in the production of reports by the missionaries. Copies of one of the reports is attached below.
IV. Impact of the Missions
One of TOKTENs goals is to compensate for the lack of teachers in the university structures. Thanks to the funds received from GlobalGiving, two (2) of the three (3) students who have defended their DEA dissertation are now Assistants at the Faculty of Science and Techniques; they are enrolled in doctoral studies in Mathematics-Computer Science. In the Department of Physics, the student enrolled in doctoral studies is Assistant in this Department. The DEA and Doctoral classes will soon help increase the number of teachers in higher education.
V. Difficulties encountered The major difficulty encountered throughout the execution of the first part of the funding was when higher education teachers went on strike. This has long paralysed the pedagogic activities and caused the delay, if not the cancellation of at least 17 missions scheduled within the 2007 annual work plan of the TOKTEN Project.
VI. Recommendations/Conclusions
Finally, now that the first advance payment by GlobalGiving has been executed 100%, we would appreciate donor support to further support our important work.
