Reach Out to an Orphan Child in Sudan

The number of orphans and children from single mother-headed households in Sudan has risen dramatically over the past few years due to war, natural disasters and poverty. 54 children from Khartoum's poorest community need health care, nutrition, education, guidance for a shot at a brighter future. They are only a quarter of the children registered in NEF's program for assistance.

Child Sponsorship for Needy Families

One of the most popular ways of helping the poor, child sponsorship is especially important for single mother-headed households in a country as troubled as Sudan. Without such assistance, many children will be unable to have health services or absolutely critical basic education. NEF gives additional financial support for clothing, special education, & culturally important celebrations.

Providing Health Services in the Poorest Area

In 2005 NEF established the only facility available to meet the health needs of over 20,000 displaced Sudanese in New Dar el-Salaam El-Rabwa. In addition to general health services--diagnosis, primary health care for mothers and children, laboratory tests and a pharmacy, the clinic emphasizes reproductive health care, including family planning, prenatal and postnatal care.

Taking Care of Women and Children's Well-Being

Greater Khartoum has been required to absorb over 2 million displaced persons because of drought-related famine and civil strife. The vast majority live in squalid conditions, suffering from inadequate housing, unemployment and lack of basic services. Women and children are victimized by a high national maternal and infant mortality rate. Thanks to the NEF clinic, these women and their babies won't become another statistic.

Doctors's Visit--Once a Near Miracle, Now Routine

"This is my fourth pregnancy, but he first time I follow up with a doctor. I used to call the midwife only when the labor pains came," commented one Sudanese woman patient at the health center. "Now I know how important it is to mantain a proper diet and healthy life-style during pregnancy," she continued, adding, "The friendly staff at the health center have taught us many things about having and raising healthy children."

Providing Services and Medications

Displaced villagers formerly had to travel long distances just to get even the most basic medications, but this has changed. At the accessible NEF clinic, women can now take care of their health and nutrition as well as their children's at the very lowest possible cost.

Hope for More Healthy and Happy Lives

NEF is delighted to report that the list of health successes is long. One 23-year-old mother of two children, Reta, was completely cured of night blindness by our nutrition educator's provision of vitamin A after researching her food habits. The vaccination counsellor informed a mother of three, Kamitha, about side effects, reversing her misinformation about vaccination killing a son, and opening the way for the protection of her children against six killer diseases including polio.

Outreach and Community Support for Orphans

Assisting the poor and needy is part of a long and sacred tradition in the Moslem world. NEF is pleased to be a part of that tradition and able to work with local organizations to assure that contributions reach those most in need. Your help can create a different destiny for otherwise doomed orphans and poor Sudanese children.
