More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
In a remote region north of Barillas, Huehuetenango, Guatemala, populated by 75,000 inhabitants, no educational facility past 9th grade exists for indigenous youth; our center will offer impoverished students further education otherwise denied them. Library resources will serve a critical component in the quality of education they will receive. Dictionaries, encycloppedias, textbooks, literary resources, charts, maps, manuals, and other materials to aid learning are needed.
Activities
An academic education will be expanded through environmental, farm animal, agricultural, and vocational training. Teaching leadership skills will be practiced through a work program with students learning to assist in the supervision of the center.

Latest Update from the Field
August 2008 Update to Library
By Mark Latham - Adopt-A-Village Board of Directors, August 08, 2008 06:41 PM
While the construction of the regional library located within the Mayan Center main (school) building is complete, the library itself cannot be completed without the addition of books and other educational resources. Students will be arriving at the center as the inaugural class once the government issues the necessary permits to conduct a full educational curriculum, but they will need the standard texts for the classes to be given. We continue to solicit and collect donations to equip the library with books and other educational tools that will facilitate and enhance the education the students receive. However, we still are a long way from our fund-raising goal for the library. We need your financial support to create a first-rate library for the Maya. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Thank you from the Maya to those who have already contributed to our library fund.
