A Nicaraguan farmer poses with his child. Farmers assisted by TechnoServe can increase their incomes from $600 to $1,800 annually. TechnoServe’s research has shown that when family incomes increase by just a few dollars per day, the levels of child malnutrition and school desertion drop dramatically. By increasing family incomes by an average of $1,200 per year with this project, we expect to see significant changes in family well-being.
A farmer with his crops
By developing farmers’ business skills and helping them to think about opportunities in terms of market demand, TechnoServe is increasing the competitiveness of Nicaraguan agricultural sector.
Farmer poses with his product
Since October 2004, TechnoServe has worked with three farmer associations in Matagalpa and Jinotega to help them identify, produce, process and market products with strong market potential in order to diversify their incomes, which have traditionally depended on the ups and downs of the coffee market. Because these farmers are located in lower-altitude areas, they cannot take advantage of the specialty coffee market.
