More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Lack of access to clean water is a grave problem for rural communities in Africa. In areas where people are malnourished, labor hard in agriculture and suffer from diarrhea and malaria, contaminated drinking water is one of the greatest health hazards, especially for children, the elderly and those infected by HIV/AIDS. The lack of access to water impacts women and girls in terms of long walks and heavy labor. 50,000 people would benefit from this project in Tanzania, Uganda and Kenya.
Activities
Identify location for water system; work with local technologies to capture water; train communities in design and construction; create and train groups to manage funds for maintenance and repair. Provide health, nutrition, education and hygiene.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
Increased time for women to work on income generating activities and for children to attend school; elimination of chronic dehydration; better household and community hygiene and reduced waterborne diseases, including diarrhea.
Project Message
"Due to malnutrition, children are particularly at risk of contracting water-borne illness. Clean water is a basic human right and necessary in rural communities to reduce child mortality."
- Linda Jo Stern, Associate V.P., Community & Reproductive Health

Although our water projects in East Africa are based out of our field office in Kenya, all of the program participants in our East Africa program area benefit from the funding. This includes villages in Tanzania, Kenya and Uganda. The following is a snapshot of a woman in Tanzania who is just one of the 50,000 participants that this project aims to help.
