Tsunami Recovery in Five Coastal Villages, India Photo Gallery

Tsunami three years later

Three years after Indian Ocean nations were lashed by massive tsunamis, somber ceremonies were held Wednesday December 27, 2007 to recall those lost in one of the worst natural catastrophes in modern times. In India, where more than 16,000 people died, especially in Tamil Nadu and Kerala, hundreds of survivors, mostly poor fishermen and their families, held a procession in Nagapattinam district in southern Tamil Nadu state, where more than 6,000 people died. Many houses still need to be rebuilt.

Rebuilding destroyed homes

In June 2007, the family of Joseph PLP is still in despair of funding to get home rebuilt.

This is same spot than picture 2, five months later! With little money received and a shear will, Joseph has started building his new home for his family. He lives with wife and 3 children in a temporary shelter. He needs US$1,500 to put a roof and make the home habitable.

Health assistance to children can save lives and help them attend school more efficiently. More funds are needed to help them.

God-children without God-parents

These three children from the slum of Chennai where tsunami survivors live under miserable conditions today need $550 each in 2007 to eat, go to school, get drinking water, medical care and proper clothing. Two girls: Thenmozhi and Kanimozhi and a boy, Surjith who want to become a policeman to help during natural calamities. Help urgently needed as we approach Christmas.

Baby "Tsunami" and his mother at Pethankuppam

This baby was born on December 24 --the day of the tsunami-- in the mid of a destroyed coastline in Tamil Nadu, India. The newborn boy survived and was baptized "Tsunami". We met the baby and his mother at the village of Pethankuppam in 2006. Both are healthy today.

Health care, rebuilding better homes and access to school are key elements of project for action in this coastal area near Kochi. Global Giving funding can make a difference to help rebuild lives.

Fishermen with new boats in Tamil Nadu

This post tsunami reconstruction project does not finance fishing boats as there is no more immediate needs for it three years after the tsunami . Basic relief has given way to the long and difficult process of reconstruction. Project is focusing on specific actions to help people live normally again whatever their trade and for children to go to school, key for the future.

Post-tsunami kids in Devanappatinam

Some of these children lost their mother to the tsunami. When we met them end January 2006, with pride they run and jumped fearlessly and joyfully into the sea that almost killed them one year earlier.

God-parenthood program

Some of the God-children shown here in Chennai are sponsored under the program. The mother of the little boy Isaac is also shown (right) with the President of MMP-MCharity (left). Claudine and Bernard are sponsoring one little girl in Kerala as part of the program. God-parenthood has a strong impact by helping poor children go back to school and receive medical care on a case by case basis.
