More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Project offers not only a distraction from the very dirty conditions of living in Vila Emater, but a viable path for youth to move out of it; using entertainment as a respite & educational tool for the entire community to improve standards of living. The Northeast is the poorest region of Brazil, with the worst HDI rates of the country, Education & health care are very bad when they exist, malnutrition is common, illiteracy is about 75% and child labor is a concern, as is child prostitution.

Activities

Art, dance, music and circus activities for the children are then used to produce educational shows for the community; wider education and support is also provided in public health, citizenship, human rights, environment and community ethics.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

This program touches the otherwise bleak lives of these children in an immeasurable way. However, it also aims to bring about long term improvements in education, family living and community awareness, whilst sustaining the local traditions.

Project Message

The lives of these people are beyond desperate and their lack of any helpful knowledge perpetuates this misery through generations- this project is sorely needed.

1559 An Alternative to Child Prostitution and Begging
“Sua Majestade o Circo” {Her Majesty’s Circus} thanks all the donors from Global Giving for their contributions and for the opportunity to elaborate on our new actions and conquests. Our project is continuing our activities, and in some cases, because of the collaboration and partnerships we have been able to expand attendance, goals and results to the young and their family of the Vila Emater II {– this is the place where the garbage of the city of Maceio - Brazil is dumped}.
In 2008 we were able to firm up our non profit status and though this process has been a slow one, but with the help of the community we created a board of directors and with a donated house we were able to construct a headquarters of our own. Having our own space we can offer better service for the kids and their families.
Our project won an award in 2008, the money that comes with this award will allow us to remodel and increase the size of the new space. Our project has become a reference in the fight against Child Labor, being invited by the “Ministério publico do trabalho”: {Minister of Labor} to go to attend conferences and participate in discussions regarding child labor and also children scavenging in the garbage dumps.
Thanks again for your contribution! Your help is always welcome, we hope that you will continue to support our work through the Global Giving website.
