More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Cinecirco wishes to fund the training of 5 staff and the purchase of a projector, screen and DVD player to bring film & documentary screenings and performance workshops to 100 youths and their wider communities in São Paulos favelas. Such projects bring the arts to people that otherwise might not experience them, whilst also using the activities to promote cultural and community awareness. So too workshops provide youths with a sense of fulfillment and an alternative to the street and crime.
Activities

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
Youths in these communities grow up in an environment of poverty, violence and crime. Art provides an effective means of initially engaging and then involving them and their families in activities that increase self esteem, learning and awareness
Project Message
The Problem amongst our movements is not a lack of passion or people power, it is a complete lack of money. We need funds to ensure that the projects can continue and the youth can learn..
- Mario Fernando Bolognesi, Coordinator of CIRCUS

Project Update, Circus
By Joshua Reed - Intern, Dreams Can Be, February 14, 2008 05:28 PM
The project Circus is continually growing in many different ways. The recently gained a larger space to work out of and also received some help from the head of the city so that they are now able to pay teachers that were previously volunteering for the project. The newly paid teachers will now be able to put in longer hours and devote more time to working with the project and the children they teach. The recognition they recently received from the government and community has also vitally enhanced their reputation among their peers.
The main need that they now currently have is for some type of vehicle such as a Volkswagen bus that will allow them to transport students and teachers to and from the project. They also are in need of a video camera that will ideally be used to film the project and gain more recognition and support through this.
Some of the youths from the project have recently put together a group called ²trupe Retalho² which make presentations throughout the city. They are taking what they have learned and are now applying it which is the realization and fulfillment of the projects main goals.
Circus is continually focused on using social networks and culture to enhance the lives of the youths in their area. Their dream is to give as many kids as possible abilities and opportunities that they normally would not have the means to obtain.
