More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Being an arid area, farming is highly vulnerable and oriented to meeting subsistence needs in the family. Men migrate because the return from agriculture is low and there are scant employment opportunities. The situation of women is more acute as they have to take care of the entire family. The project will meet the economic needs of women through SHGs. SHGs are a powerful tool for providing credit to acutely poor populations, while fostering economic and social empowerment among group members.

Activities

Organize 200 women into SHGs; train women in group management, saving, bookkeeping, and interacting with local banks. Provide small loans for viable and practical income-generation projects; ensure ownership of processes-conception to delivery.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

The project will further the social and economic empowerment of women in Rajasthan to a profound degree. The SHGs provide a powerful platform to improve women’s decision-making power and the economic well-being of families and whole communities.

Project Message

We need to raise the self-esteem of women and provide them the opportunity beyond their day-to-day drudgery.
- Shashi Tyagi, Secretary, GRAVIS

Since the last project update in March 2008, GRAVIS has formed 4 more self-help groups (SHGs), having now formed a total of 12 SHGs in the past year. GRAVIS is currently helping the 4 new SHGs to access capital assistance form the local banks, to be able to manage income-generating projects. The new members will be carrying out projects in livestock rearing, improving agricultural practices and investment for grocery and vegetables shops at their village.
