More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The volcanic eruption left at least 2,400 people in need of relocation because of irreparable damage to houses and land. Official estimates place the number of damage or destroyed homes at 3,000, and over 20,000 people lost land used for agricultural production. Governments have been unresponsive and, as a result, many are left without shelter or basic services. This project will select a group of refugees and, with their help, will construct a community with productive areas and a local school.

Activities

Esquel and local allies will construct homes, a school and medical center as well as provide basic infrastructure for services such as potable water and roads; community members will be trained in productive endeavors to ensure their sustainability.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

This project focuses both on providing the community with sustainable means of income, as well as relocating locals outside of areas in danger of further damage by eruptions. Thus, the community will be a durable living area for 250 people.

Project Message

We don’t have much left, we don’t know what we are going to do.
- Nancy Altamirano, Victim of Tungurahua’s violent eruption.

Latest Update from the Field

The Land is our Foundation

By Santiago Martinez - Fundraising Coordinator, August 02, 2007 07:20 PM

The most vital aspect of truly getting this project on its feet is in the final stage.

Land plot negotiations will be finalized within the next few weeks, thus allowing for the heart of the project to truly begin. Within a month, infrastructure will be underway, including the building of roads, homes, and schools, and access to safe water.

We at Esquel are enthused to have the land we need to begin resettling our 250 beneficiaries in a safe community that will allow them to begin to rebuild their lives.
