More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Works in three main provincial areas: Tungurahua, Cotopaxi, and Chimborazo. Indigenous populations—specifically of Kichwa heritage—are large in each of these provinces. Within this population, illiteracy rates reach up to 30% and inhabitants receive scarcely more than two years of schooling on average. To resolve these problems, and to improve student and parent participation, this program provides an education sensitive to indigenous cultural heritage, especially language, to over 2,000 pupils.

Activities

Improve school facilities conforming to local traditions. Teachers are trained to instruct children of various ages, and a bilingual curriculum is formed. Esquel provides didactic materials as well as desks and chairs.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

This project looks to create respect for education among the people it serves. As quality of instruction is improved, both children and adults value education to a greater degree. The resources Esquel provides will serve each community in the future.

Project Message

I believe in the education of my children, but the conditions of the schools do not allow them to study. There are no books, space, not even a bathroom. With this project they can study with dignity.
- Rosario Anilema, Mother of children in our rural schools program

Latest Update from the Field

Brief summary of main activities implemented throughout 2007

By Fundación Esquel-Ecuador - , November 12, 2007 01:00 PM

The Rural Bilingual Education Program looks forward to the strengthening of the MOSEIB (Model for Intercultural Bilingual Education: Kichwa/Spanish) through an integral methodology that includes: improvement of school facilities, providing adequate school equipment and pedagogical materials for children, and training teachers on different areas, all of which will be coordinated with Provincial Bilingual Directions and the benefited communities.

During 2007 this program implemented 4 different projects that all focused on the improvement of Rural Bilingual Education in the provinces of Chimborazo, Tungurahua and Cotopaxi. These provinces are located in the Central Highland Region of Ecuador and their population is mainly composed of a large percentage of indigenous population.

In addition we are also conducting a separate research project on the qualities and skills that teachers of indigenous children aged 0 to 8 years have.

Among the achieved results we can mention:

•   21 schools benefited from improvements in infrastructure.
•   23 schools benefited from new and comfortable school chairs and tables.
•   50 schools benefited from pedagogical material and reading books for children
•   10 schools benefited from the implementation of school orchards meant to contribute to children’s food security.
•   More than 500 teachers received training on different areas such as Learning Difficulties, use of audiovisual resources within the classroom, Children’s Rights, Andean and Amazonic Cosmovision, and other workshops related to the strengthening of the Model for Intercultural Bilingual Education which consists of training regarding the different tools and curricular materials that are part of the system.
•   More than 4000 children benefited from all the activities that took place throughout the implementation of the projects.
•   More than 2600 parents were also involved and took part of this whole process of building a better educational environment for children.
