More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The Province of Pichincha, the focus of this program, is plagued by high levels of unemployment, low levels of schooling and scarce access to credit. Combined, these factors limit the economic and development opportunities available to youth. This program will train 360 young people to become the initiators of their own social and economic development, with the goal of creating at least 50 new enterprises, ultimately benefiting the entire community by creating jobs and training community leaders

Activities

Youth will be trained in educational workshops focusing on leadership and management. The program will establish a microcredit fund—to be run by youth participants—as well as a system of technical assistance to ensure enterprise sustainability

Ecuadorian Youth Bring Innovation to the Work Force

By Santiago Martinez - Fundraising Coordinator, August 02, 2007 07:20 PM

A promising number of Ecuadorian youth have actively participated in our initiative to bring small business to a community in desperate need of employment opportunities.

Over 1,000 young Ecuadorians from the Province of Pichincha attended a series of conferences on entreprenuer skills and practices. The conferences were facilitated by a team of professionals: faculty from Ecuador’s Catholic University, Esquel employees, and members of Pichincha´s Provincial Government.

In the next stage of the project, 142 separate business plans were presented to the team. 386 individuals were involved in the creation of these various plans.

31 of the 142 projects were selected as top initiatives. The founders of these 31 projects received technical assistance and additional training to further develop their plans.

Finally, 3 projects received economic stipends to begin their business. A grant was rewarded to the winning project and loans have been distributed to the 2 runner-ups.

Esquel continues to support all of the projects presented and work for the sustainability of each business.
