2007 SAYE activities
By Jessica Joye - Marketing Communications Coordinator, December 13, 2007 05:57 PM
TechnoServe has begun designing, developing and introducing its School Age Youth Entrepreneurship (SAYE) program to secondary schools around Swaziland. In 2007, TechnoServe partnered with Junior Achievement (JA) to use their curriculum and methodology in the schools. We have also developed a network of partners, volunteers, job shadow hosts and financiers to support SAYE.
In partnership with JA, TechnoServe is implementing several exciting projects: the JA Economies for Success, which introduces economic concepts, personal finances and budget management skills; JA Company, a project where students create their own company; JA Expo, a mini-business plan competition; and Job Shadowing, where students participate in two to three day internships with local businesses.
Economies for Success was piloted in October 2006. Since that time 100 youth from eight secondary schools have participated. The Company program was launched in June 2007, with participation from 16 schools involving 400 students. The 16 businesses started as a result of the program generated E 43,000 in revenues. The Expo awarded prizes for various awards including; best overall business performance, highest sales, best CEO, and best product/service to the participating businesses.
With additional support from various donors the SAYE program can reach its goal of training over 7,500 students across Swaziland in the next 3 years.
