Mercy Corps has sponsored the deconstruction of eight entire houses and hopes to deconstruct another seven by the spring 2008. Local contractors have been trained in standard deconstruction methods, local agencies have received tons of reusable building materials, and homeonwers have been involved with the transformation of their former homes.
This past November, Mercy Corps partnered with Rebuilding Together, a branch of the Preservation Resource Center and National Historic Preservation Trust to deconstruct a collpsed house in the Central City neighborhood of New Orleans. Materials were donated to Rebuilding Together which will use them to help rebuild homes across New Orleans.
Attachments:

A team of workers recovers salvage from collapsed roof

Deconstruction Pilot- full speed ahead

Mercy Corps has successfully completed a number of deconstructions in and around the New Orleans area, diverting tons of waste from overflowing landfills. Much of the salvaged material from the deconstructions has been directed to new construction and renovation projects around the city. A number of contractors have been trained and a new depot is in the works where salvaged building supplies will be sold in communities that need them.
Attachments:

Deconstruction Fact Sheet and Pilot Summary

Deconstruction Strategic Logframe
