February 2007 Monitoring Visit

By Rosemary Godfrey - Rare Senior Course Manager, Kent, April 25, 2007 05:20 PM

The port Royal Pride Campaign has 3 main themes (sub-goals) with objectives around, the following themes – with completed or “in action” activities noted below:

--Natural Resource Harvesting (and specifically reducing dynamiting)
*Workshop for fishermen on sustainable marine harvesting
*Environmental Quiz

--Reducing the negative impact of recreational visitors from anchoring on the coral reef, parking on sand dunes and removing plants
*Workshop for Water Taxi Operators to increase their capacity for advocating environmentally friendly tourism

--Reducing littering and dumping, through creation of youth groups, along with bollard installation
*Beach and Mangrove Clean up with 140 participants
*School Visits

As the above summary indicates, to date the Port Royal Pride Campaign, with Marsha Mason as Pride Campaign Manager, has completed, or is currently implementing 5 activities. There are an additional 14 activities or production items – and with each – progress is being made.

This is a critical time for the campaign, whereby Marsha has lots of productions and activities on the tip of being implemented/completed – but it is going to take 100% dedication of Marsha’s time and energy, and a lot of support from her colleagues, in order to have a chance of successfully reaching the objectives.
