Womens Association for Development, Sacatepéquez
Mission
The purpose of AFEDES is to help indigenous women in the Guatemalan province of Sacatepéquez develop their leadership capacities so as to increase the well-being of themselves and their communities, ultimately leading to a more equitable and just society. The organization promotes the social, political and economic empowerment of indigenous women by providing training in issues of gender, self-esteem, and womens rights as well as income-generating skills and financial management.
Programs
The Community Organizing Program helps women form village groups to carry out income-generating projects. Training is offered in project planning, financial administration and evaluation as well as broader issues such as civic participation and violence prevention. The Economic Development Program offers microcredit to member groups and helps train them to run their own businesses. The Education Program offers small loans to families to be able to pay for school costs for their girl children.
