Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Pre-school children in Dar Es-Salaam limited to 30 students in 8-feet-square room with no windows. Majority of area women are illiterate with classes on the ground, under a canvas shelter (NEF provided), no water or other resources. Students need regular health exams, school health education, referrals, subsidies for poor unable to go to our health center; expand into another school of mostly drop-outs/orphan students mornings, adult women afternoons, family health/income teaching evenings.

Activities

Elemental school rehabilitation including latrines & water; construction of pre-school at Al-Tagwa School; literacy/adult education for women; health education & exams/treatment/subsidies by NEF clinic; more participation by PTA and Local Committee.

The work of the Near East Foundation has had a clear impact on the lives of the orphans, particularly in terms of their academic success and also provisions during holidays and other special occasions.

To further develop this project, funding is allocated to sponsor 20 orphans in both the district of Soba and Salma and that of Dar al-Salaam al-Rabwa. NEF is currently in the process of finalizing the choice of which schools to work with and has resumed its with local committees and the education committee to this purpose.
