More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Project addresses the lack of affordable treatment and bracing for 100 youth with disabilities in the DR Congoa country with a uniquely severe disability problem and where IPVRC maintains treatment centers in 6 different cities. Impact on beneficiaries' mobility, dignity and opportunity for full societal integration is typically very high, with many beneficiaries progressing from having to crawl on all fours to walking upright and others freed from unnecessary pain and deformity.
Activities
Trained technicians (themselves disabled) craft high-quality, custom-fit braces to enable/assist disabled Congolese youth to walk. Pre-bracing surgery by a specialist is provided for cases requiring it; physical therapy is provided after bracing.

Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
The 100 youths whose mobility will be enhanced will be more able to fully integrate in Congolese society, becoming less dependent, contributing to the country's development, and serving to decrease the isolation and stigma associated with disability.
Project Message
"After the operation, I received the braces and crutches I had waited for during 9 years of suffering. Once again on my feet and walking upright, I began to realize that I could be useful to society.
- Didier Bofatshi, Past beneficiary now serving as an IPVRC cashier.

Latest Update from the Field
IPVRC is now StandProud
By Tony Gambino - StandProud Advisory Board Member, December 13, 2007 05:58 PM
IPVRC has just changed its name to "StandProud: Helping Polio Survivors and Youth with Other Disabilities in Africa to Walk." Just say StandProud, which says it all: helping African children with disabilities to walk and to have pride in themselves and what they can accomplish in their lives. What an amazing achievement for these children once their disability is corrected and they can walk, dance, play soccer, go to school, and take control of their lives. That's what StandProud helps them do. StandProud is also proud of our many donors. This time we'd like to feature our youngest supporter, based in Maryland. She has raised over $2,000 for StandProud in the last few months around her Bat Mitzvah. GlobalGiving helped make this possible by making space and special tools available on this website for her so she could create a special page devoted to StandProud and her support for this project. The results have been amazing. Finally, take a look at our new newsletter, which is attached. Browse through the pictures -- just looking at them may well convince you to donate. We look forward to counting you as a StandProud donor. Thank you. Attachments:
