More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Armenian orphans, abandoned due to their mental illness or disability, are relegated at the fragile age of 18 to inhumane psychiatric institutions that fail to meet their most basic needs and do little to help them live dignified and productive lives. In most cases the orphans’ illnesses/disabilities are aggravated and the gross misconceptions society holds about them are further reinforced. A more humane and community-based approach is crucial to the livelihood of this vulnerable population.

Activities

Providing holistic care to the residents (physical, mental and social rehabilitation), community reintegration programs (recreational and vocational) and instigating a grassroots movement from institutionalization to community-based homes.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

FWH has been recognized by the Armenian government as a pilot project for the deinstitutionalization of individuals with mental illness or disabilities and will be expanding in 2007 to provide residents with dignified and quality lives in community.

Project Message

Warm Hearth is a wonderful idea, which will allow for the first time young adults with disabilities to live on their own and receive critical life skills which will help them to join the community.
- Patrick Hart, Peace Corps Armenia Country Director
