Service Scholarships
By Ms. Bobby Overman - Communication Director, August 06, 2008 05:22 PM
International Friends of Belize is pleased to announce four service scholarships have been awarded to students in the Toledo District of Belize. The purpose of these scholarships is to provide financial assistance to deserving students who have an interest in serving their community. The recipients of these scholarships and their community programs are Devon Paulino who will help with remedial classes in his school; Lashawn Audinette who's project will be serving at the community hospital; Lisa Garnett will work at the school computer lab helping the primary school students and Alvin Chavarria has chosen to help primary school students do research at the St. Peter Claver library as his service project. All four of the scholarship winners will be attending Toledo Community College in Punta Gorda, Belize. The service scholarship program is a pilot program in the Toledo District and International Friends of Belize hopes to expand this project to other districts in the future once funding is available.
Community Service Scholarship
By Ms. Bobby Overman - Communications Director, March 12, 2008 06:50 PM
The community service scholarship program will be offered in the Toledo district of Belize. The purpose of this scholarship program is to provide financial assistance to deserving students who have an interest in serving their community. International Friends of Belize hopes to promote civic engagement among students and an interest in serving others. Recipients of the scholarships will be asked to perform 5 hours of community service per week for a total of 20 hours per month. Service projects could include tutoring, volunteering at the hospital, library or clinic or assisting community elders. The scholarship committee has developed the community service concept, criteria and timeline and has publicized the program in the Toledo district. Letters have been sent to the Principals of the two schools in the district and once we have received a letter confirming their desire to participate in this program, applications will be made available for students who are interested in participating in the program. The scholarship committee is very excited about this new scholarship program and looks forward to funding deserving students in the Toledo district.
