The Seventh Ward Marches On...
By Suzy Mason - Program Officer- MC GCHR Office, December 19, 2007 10:11 PM
Camp ACE and St. John # 5 Faith Church not only provide academic enhancement and positive youth development services for local children, young adults and families, but they also provide leadership for the entire neihgborhood and act as advocates for residents whose voices are often lost. Elderly residents, former housing development residents, victims of domestic violence and their children, and other disadvantaged populations rely on Camp Ace and St. John # 5 to act on their behalf and help the 7th Ward community come back better than ever.
Recently the organization received support and resources from the local government to enhance their youth programming. They were one of hte organizations charged with cutting the high drop out rates in the 7th Ward and across the city. Although the local government supports their good work, Camp Ace still needs your help.
Camp ACE Summer Camp
By Suzy Mason - Mercy Corps Gulf Coast Officer, August 15, 2007 05:09 PM
Camp ACE, St. John # 5 Faith Church is conluding its summer camp program and is gearing the kids up to start school in the fall. The center has provided academic training and behavioral modification for children throughout the summer to improve their grades and academic standing. Camp ACE always aims to take care it its community members, through youth, counseling, health awareness measures, and housing assistance for the eldery, disabled, and victims of domestic violence. The youth development component of their services provides an avenue for positive progress to economically disadvantaged children from around New Orleans. Camp ACE provides critical services for at risk youth free of charge to parents who cannot afford for.
Recently, Camp ACE took their summer camp participants to an outdoor camp in Ithaca, New York. An Ithaca group named, Love Knows no Bounds, funded the retreat. Many of the children had never seen mountains or been exposed to nature at that level. The city of Ithaca has adopted the 7th Ward as their sister city. The Love Knows No Bounds group has made various trips and donations to Camp ACE to support their efforts in the recovery of the city.
