Reading isn't just for school
A summer camp participant not only enjoys time with friends, but also has intense sessions of academic study with help from teachers and older kids at the Camp ACE summer program.

Camp ACE
Even with modest facilities such as this, Camp ACE is able to serve and encourage dozens of youths who live near the St Bernard Housing Development.

St Bernard Housing Development
The St. Bernard Housing Development stands vacant save for the few squatters who still use it for shelter. The city has no plans to reopen the facility. Dozens of families come to Camp ACE/ St. John # 5 Faith Church as a Community Center to help them find local affordable housing.

St. John # 5 Faith Church
St. John # 5 Faith Churhc led by Pastor Bruce Davenport is down the block form the Camp ACE facilities. The youth program and HIV testing program budded from the church's desire to help the young people in the community stay healthy and obtain higher levels of education.

GED preparation and virtual learning coming soon!
While Camp ACE has obtained computers, it is still trying to find funding to fully reinstitute its GED preparation for adults and virtual learning classes for children and young adults. Pastor Bruce feels the computer courses help ignite a healthy technological interest for some kids who might otherwise take to the streets after school.

Taking a break
Young adults and children of all ages attend the Camp ACE summer program. The older children often volunteer their time to counsel and teach the younger kids.

Another important community initiative...
Beside Camp ACE's academic building is the soon to be complete health and HIV testing center. Several young women are working hard to complete the facility and find funding to support this critical service for the community. St. John # 5 Faith Church supports and administers this program as well.
