More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
The 2,700 islanders of Wasini fall into the WHO category of no access to water and therefore should have an intervention priority and action rating of Very High. Diarrhoea from dirty water accounts for 11% of deaths in poor countries, which can be reduced through sanitation. We will help the villagers collect rainwater, store it and use it in a clean and sanitary manner. Renovation of existing but poorly inadequate facilities, combined with small scale collection provide the best solutions.
Activities
Renovation of existing storage with thick flexible liners will enable their use again. Villagers will also be helped with the preparation of new tanks from pits excavated for bricks. Excess water will be sold to local hotels to cover maintenance.

Resources
Why this Project is Important
Potential Long Term Impact
Water will be provided for 2,700 islanders who presently have to buy water from the mainland. In the long term this will be self sustaining, with materials being cheap to maintain, excess water being sold and money being saved due to free access.
Project Message
For many months of the year these communities rely on buying and transporting all their fresh water from the mainland, adding cost and in rough seas, risk to this most basic of human rights.

Latest Update from the Field
First donation in but more needed to bring the villagers clean, safe and accessible water
By Andy Woods-Ballard - Director of Operations, October 04, 2007 04:53 PM
The GVI Charitable Trust has already helped raise funds for a number of programs in Mkwiro, including refurbishment of the Orphanage, building of classrooms, provision of food, wages for a pharmacist and many more. With your help we can greatly improve the lives of the villagers by providing clean, safe and accessible water. We are also fundraising from other sources to make up for any shortfall, but please give generously to this program as it is one of the villagers priorities. Well over $20,000 have come in from a variety of sources so far and by working closely with the villagers we are ensuring that these funds are used to maximum benefit in a long term and sustainable manner.
