Clean water for 2,700 on Wasini Island, Kenya Photo Gallery
Water storage
This picture shows the sorely inadequate and leaking water storage on the island. The rain is collected as it runs down the concrete into a pit under the iron roof.
Roof
The iron roof is rusty and falling to pieces further polluting the water inside.
Rotting concrete
In this picture you can see the poor quality of the concrete within the pit, clearly degrading on the far wall. Also the steps allow access for anything from mosquitos to small animals, causing a variety of health issues.
Low water
Low water levels are demonstrated in this photo, only a short time after the rainy season.
Digging a new pit
This photo shows clearly the coral rag that makes up the island. Not only is this material hard to dig, but it also allows fresh water to run through, leaving no natural fresh water sources on the island.
Working by hand
Working by hand to clear these pits is a long and hard task.
Bricks
As with everything on the island, nothing is waisted and the materials are mined out as bricks for construction in the village.
Irrigation
Along with water for the people, if successful enough the pits could be used for irrigation schemes for the barely furtile dry soil.
