More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
IDEX is working with our local partners in South Asia to provide emergency relief. In Bangladesh our partner SATU has reported at least 135 people have died, over 10 million are affected. Hospitals, roads, houses have all been washed away. In Bihar, India our partner Manavi reports that the Ganges has washed out crops and people are taking shelter on railway lines. Families in this region survive on their crops and farm animals. With these gone they are fast running out of food, clean water.
Activities
IDEX will use the funds to buy rice, pulses (beans and peas) and water purification tablets to provide emergency food, salt, saline and clean water to 6000 families (30,000 people). Each person will receive two meals per day for five days.

October 2007 Update
By Katherine Zavala - Programs Coordinator, October 11, 2007 08:20 PM
A total of 36 districts in Bangladesh have been inundated by floods. By August 2007. The flood has caused damages to crops of around 600,000 acres of land, wiped out thousands of miles of roads, washed away vast swathes of river embankments, and caused critical damage to nearly 2000 schools. People affected by the flood have lost their houses, cattle and crops in their fields. Houses, latrines, and chicken coups have also been washed away. The flood victims have been sheltered on the nearest river embankments, roads, schools and government institutions and some have migrated. They have no work, no income and are using what little money they have to buy food.
SATU has launched relief activities in Tangail and Sirajganj Districts. Among the 12 zones in Tangail District, the flood inundated 1,520 villages, and the Sirajganj district was completely flooded, affecting 3 million people. In these two districts, SATU had 26 branches operating who were able to organize short-term relief for local families.
