More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The Synergo Weaving Bench provides indigenous weavers in the highlands of Guatemala with relief from the pain & physical disability associated with the backstrap loom. Unlike the traditional weaving posture of kneeling on the ground, the Synergo Weaving Bench is ergonomically designed to work in harmony with the weaver. It lets women protect their health, produce more products of better quality and increase their ability to provide for their families, while preserving their culture.

Activities

We are producing an educ. DVD & providing tech support to enable local people to make the bench with high quality/low cost. In the coming year we would like to enable at least 500 Mayan women in Guatemala to acquire the bench & use it well.

Total Funding Received to Date: $645

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

As has been demonstrated by the pilot project, the ergonomic bench helps women increase their family income, safely. This project helps 500 women provide better nutrition & education for their children, and at the same time protect their own health.

Project Message

What used to take me three days to weave now takes two. With the bench I can weave for hours with no pain! My weaving comes out better, with straighter edges and more evenly packed weft.

Latest Update from the Field

resources for carpenters; International Day of the Woman

By Karen Piegorsch - Project Director, August 07, 2008 06:21 PM

On a visit to Guatemala in March we continued developing the infrastructure to help the local people produce and distribute the bench. Two groups of carpenters have been identified. Our resource kits for carpenters have been designed to ensure that the ergonomic features of the bench are preserved. This benefits the backstrap weavers while also helping local carpenters develop new skills.

During this visit in March Karen Piegorsch and Juana Ramos were invited to join the Museo Ixchel (the famous museum of indigenous clothing and textiles in Guatemala City) for their annual celebration of the International Day of the Woman. We were honored to make a presentation on the ergonomic bench to the participants from the museum and their fair trade partner organization, Pro-Teje.

Currently our major focus for this project is raising the remaining funds to complete production of the multilingual DVD. We are eager to get this important resource into the hands of the backstrap weavers who need it!
