More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

The Synergo Weaving Bench provides indigenous weavers in Mexico with relief from the pain & physical disability associated with the backstrap loom. Unlike the traditional weaving posture of kneeling on the ground, the Synergo Weaving Bench is ergonomically designed to work in harmony with the weaver. It lets women protect their health, produce more products of better quality and increase their ability to provide for their families, while preserving their culture.

Activities

We are producing an educ. DVD & providing tech support to enable local people to make the bench with high quality/low cost in Latin America. In the coming year we would like to expand to Mexico, & provide the bench & education initially to 12 women.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

As has been demonstrated by the pilot project, the ergonomic bench helps women increase their family income, safely. This project helps 12 women provide better nutrition & education for their children, and at the same time protect their own health.

Project Message

What used to take me three days to weave now takes two. With the bench I can weave for hours with no pain! My weaving comes out better, with straighter edges and more evenly packed weft.
- Maria, Beneficiary of the original project in Guatemala

Latest Update from the Field

see our interview with Global X on YouTube!

By Karen Piegorsch - Project Director, February 13, 2008 05:11 PM

An interview I gave with Global X last August aired recently on YouTube. It's about the program we're doing with backstrap weavers.

The interview follows a three part format: "Who are you?;" "Tell us a story;" and, "How do you see the world in 2017?"

If you'd like to see it, please link to it from the Synergo Arts website (www.synergoarts.org) or go directly to it at YouTube via the link below.

Thanks for your interest in helping Synergo Arts help women artisans!
