More Information About this Project
Project Needs and Beneficiaries
Julio Otoni is a small low income community (favela) in Rio de Janeiro. As in other poor areas of Rio de Janeiro, it is heavily affected by the presence of criminal gangs, drugs and guns. Due in part to the lack of occupational alternatives in the community, it is not at all unusual for children as young as 12 and 13 to become involved with gang culture. As an alternative we engage these young people in activities such as computing, English, Capoeira, development of radio skills.
Activities
CEMINA has built a center at Julio Otoni community which is equipped with computers and internet broadband access as well as radio equipment, this allows young people to be trained and also to develop educational messages to their communities.

Project Message
By being part of the project I got to be in a beach for the first time in my life. Even though Rio is a city by the sea I had never touched salt water in my life and I am 11 years old.
