Help Women Access Land and Rights in S. Africa Photo Gallery
A Team of Home-Based Health Volunteers
The health volunteers are a critical resource for rural families. They connect families with health care, including access to Anti-Retroviral treatment for those with HIV/AIDS. They also facilitate travel to local clinics for AIDS testing and other health matters. In addition they help relocate orphaned children with other family members.
Land Claim Success
Khethiwe has 2 daughters, 1 sister but no brothers. Under South African inheritance law, she is entitled to her father’s farm, all 25 hectares. But her male cousin claimed the farm after Khethiwe’s father died. She didn’t pursue the case because as a woman she didn’t think she could win. Sizani Ngubane, Director of RWM, encouraged Khethiwe to fight for her land. With RWM’s support Khethiwe presented her case to the Department of Land Affairs and began the process of returning to her land.
