More Information About this Project

Project Needs and Beneficiaries

Over 30 years of war has shattered the DRC’s infrastructure, economy, and ability to provide basic services such as education. Once a woman learns to read and write in our program, she can run her own business, join a woman’s cooperative and pass her literacy skills on to her children. We are helping women not just to live but to the thrive.

Activities

As seen on 60 Minutes, our program teaches women literacy and writing skills. Program graduates have become businesswomen, farmers and community leaders; supporting our conviction that stronger women build stronger nations.

Why this Project is Important

Potential Long Term Impact

Creating a literate society in the DRC is a way of engaging women in creating lasting change and stability within the country. If we can stabilize the women we serve, they can in turn help stabilize their communities and their countries.

Project Message

"I feel like I am someone important. The recognition that I have been given today has made me realize that I am a valuable member in my community."
- Honorata, participant in the DRC program

Latest Update from the Field

Women of the DRC Program Featured on 60 Minutes

By Shannon O'Donnell - Online Marketing Manager, March 19, 2008 05:22 PM

In early November:
Women for Women International received a call from
CBS’s 60 Minutes notifying them that they would like to
do a piece on the epidemic and effect of rape on women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. They specifically wanted to visit the Program Office and speak to the some of the participants for first hand accounts of what they had seen and endured as women living in the DRC.

Saturday, November 10th:
Upon landing at Kavumu airport in Bukavu from Goma; the 60 Minutes Crew came directly to the Women for Women Program office to start filming. They shot inside the ceramic studio where participants were actively making tiles, as well as participants in rights awareness groups, literacy, cooking class, sponsorship payment, letter writing, etc.

They interviewed several participants in the program and heard them read letters from their sponsors. They talked with Judithe Registre with Women for Women International, about what life is like for the women in the program, and what Women for Women International is doing to help.

After appearing on 60 Minutes with Anderson Cooper, we received an overwhelming response and were so very appreciative or our sponsors. While there is so much to be done, it touches our heart that so many want to help.
